National Cursillo conference in Phoenix on Oct. 27-20

The National Episcopal Cursillo Conference will be held in Phoenix
on Oct. 27-30, 2011. All Cursillistas are invited. This is the first
opportunity in several years for Cursillistas in the Western U.S. to
attend an annual conference in this part of the country.

What does the National Episcopal Cursillo Conference have to offer?
Community
Fellowship
Networking
Small Groups
Old Friends
New Friends
Business Sessions
Workshops
Worship
Music
Breaking Bread Together

One of the highlights of the conference will be the workshop on
Restarting/Renewing the Cursillo Movement in your area. People in the
5Cs area may be particularly interested in this session. This is a
chance to learn from the people who successfully restarted the Arizona
movement just a few years back.

The conference’s keynote speaker will be The Rt. Rev. Dorsey
Henderson, a longtime supporter of Cursillo who retired as bishop of the
Diocese of Upper South Carolina in 2009.

NEC CONFERENCE 2011 WORKSHOPS

1.
4th Day First — a means for living out our Baptismal
Covenant more effectively through Piety, Study and Action What do they
really mean and why are all three important. The Fourth Day is the heart
of the Cursillo Method. Our heartbeat in this world of constant change
as the rhythm of living out our Baptismal Covenant through Piety, Study
and Action so that we and other Christians become the apostles that God
created them and us to be. This workshop explores that rhythm, what it
has been and, moreover, its possibilities. If you are seeking to make
4th Day living more effective and meaningful, this workshop is for you.

2.
Revitalizing/Restarting your Movement — Member(s) of
the Cursillo Movement in the Diocese of Arizona share the obstacles and
successes they experienced as they started their movement anew after a
10 + year hiatus. It was not an overnight venture but one of prayer and
discernment, study, then apostolic action. This panel format will offer a
sharing of experiences along with an opportunity for questions and
answers. The panel is eager for others to describe their experiences and
concerns and to share their recommendations and encouragement as well.
It is an ideal workshop for dioceses looking to revitalize a tired
movement, and those who are exploring restarting movements currently on
Sabbatical.

3.
Clergy — Recruitment of clergy and their Role in both
weekend and Fourth Day. Cursillo is not a Lay Movement. It is one of the
best examples of team ministry in the life of the church. Clergy and
Laity each have a significant role in the success of the Cursillo
Movement. This workshop is designed to help clergy better understand
and carry out their role, not just on the Three-day Weekend, but in the
Fourth Day as well. It is also designed to help diocesan movements
recruit, encourage and support clergy involvement in all aspects of
Cursillo.

4.
“What Would Jesus Tweet?” Did Jesus invent the
Internet? We may not know for sure! We do know that He’d encourage the
use of all resources to spread the word about Cursillo! The workshop
will address: Using electronic information technology to build and
sustain effective communication among Cursillo communities;
Cost-effective tools and resources for designing and maintaining web
sites, using listservs, and making the most of social networking
options such as Facebook and Twitter; Using technology to promote
Cursillo growth, without losing the heart of our person-to-person
approach. Are you involved in communication in your Cursillo Movement?
Newsletter, Webmaster, etc., this workshop is for you.

5.
Informal Dialogue with the Keynoter. This dialogue will
provide an opportunity for participants to further explore the content
of the Keynote Address. As Bishop Henderson has been a long time
supporter of the Cursillo Movement, he is also a great resource on the
impact of Cursillo in the ministry of a diocese.

EPISCOPAL CURSILLO LEADERS WORKSHOP

There will also be an Episcopal Cursillo Leaders Workshop at the Conference, beginning Thursday, Oct. 27, at 8:30 a.m.

Why attend an ECLW? * To clarify the purpose and method of the Cursillo
Movement. * To provide a background on the intent of the founders of
the Cursillo Movement. * To give people involved in the Movement a
clearer understanding of their roles. * To learn about the tools
available to make the Cursillo movement an effective instrument in the
work of the church. * To help the various Diocesan Cursillo Movements
find ways to make their respective movements more effective. * To help
people deepen their commitment to Christ.

VISIT ARIZONA

Conference organizers urge us all who come to “take advantage of
what we learn from one another through the gifts each of us brings when
we gather. Then go home re-energized, refreshed, renewed to do the work
of growing Christ-centered leaders and changing our environments for
Christ. ”Come early or stay longer — there is much to see and do in
the Phoenix area. … There’s no place on earth quite like Arizona. It’s a
land of breathtaking canyons, lush desert valleys, crystal lakes, and
rugged mountain peaks. Whether you’re looking for world class resorts,
dining, golf and spas, or places to bike, fish, hike, or boat,
throughout the Grand Canyon State you are sure to find friendly
hospitality to match the warmth of the sun.”

Rooster: Annual meeting and much more …

Please come on May 21:
Annual meeting and Grand Ultreya

Elections at Cursillo’s annual meeting on Saturday, May 21, will determine who will help decide the next steps that the Cursillo community will make in our diocese. Positions on the secretariat to be filled that day include three three-year seats for lay Cursillistas and one three-year seat for an ordained Cursillista. The secretariat serves as a board of directors for Episcopal Cursillo in the diocese, setting policies, determining how many Cursillo weekends are held, selecting rectors and rectoras, etc. Please think and pray about whether this is a ministry you called to. The secretariat meets once a month on Saturday mornings at various churches in the diocese. If you have any questions, contact any of the current members of the secretariat (listed below).

The gathering will begin at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral Center, 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles 90026. We will start with a celebration of the Eucharist, followed by the business meeting and the annual Grand Ultreya, and ending with a pot-luck supper.

Put up a poster advertising the May 21 meeting

Please help spread the word about the annual meeting and Grand Ultreya by posting a flyer in Spanish and/or in English. To get a copy by email, write to cestewart@cox.net.

Save the date to attend the National Cursillo convention in Phoenix

The National Episcopal Cursillo convention is a time for renewal, fellowship, learning and fun. It’s an annual event that’s open to all Cursillistas. This year it will be held in Phoenix — a location that’s much more convenient than usual for Californians. The dates of the convention are Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 27-30. (Unfortunately, that conflicts with our women’s Spanish-speaking Cursillo weekend in Pomona.) We will provide more information as it become available.

Parish representatives

Each parish with an active Cursillo community, or even just one or two cursillistas, should have a parish representative. That person will help maintain communications between parish cursillistas and the secretariat. Please suggest who would be a good contact person for your parish by sending an email to cestewart@cox.net. Perhaps it’s you.

Prayer requests

Please pray for the following Cursillo weekends around the country. These Cursillo communities pray for our weekends and send us palanca. We’ll be sending them palanca too, assuring them of our prayers that the Holy Spirit will touch each of the people on these weekends:

September (specific weekend not specified): Western New York Episcopal Cursillo

Sept. 15-18: women’s weekend, Tasmania, Australia

Sept. 22-25: co-ed weekend, Christchurch, New Zealand

Also, Episcopal Cursillo in Maine asks for prayers that they will find an affordable, handicap-accessible facility where they can hold their next weekend.

Share Your Experience

We are putting together material to help us reach out to those who do not understand the life changing nature of the Cursillo experience. You can assist us in this progress by telling your story. Please write down, a short story saying something about your Cursillo weekend or your subsequent experience as a member of the Cursillo community. We will tell these stories to others so please make sure to let us know if you do not want us to use your name. You can respond by email to phildice@gmail.com. Remember, your story is part of the larger story of how God is active in the world today. De Colores, Phil Dice.

Subscribe to the Rooster (free)

We want to send the Rooster to every cursillista in the diocese who wants to receive it, but our mailing list has some gaps.

To fix that, we’re asking you:

1. Please forward a copy of this issue to each cursillista that you know in the Los Angeles diocese whose email address you have.

2. If you received this email from a friend but not directly from Cursillo AND if you want to continue to receive it, please forward it one more time — to our mailing list manager (Dan Cash at dan.r.c@sbcglobal.net). Simply put “Cursillo” in the subject line and add at the top, “Please add me to the mailing list.”

Thanks.
